Peter Frankopan, 2023. The Earth Transformed. An Untold History. London: Bloomsbury.
The book presents the history of our planet as of its inception, 4.5 billion years ago, and the history of man (hominin species) as of 7 million years ago.
The book's goals are, first, to reinsert climate back into the story of the past as an often overlooked theme in global history; second, to describe the interaction of humanity with nature across the timespan of human existence; third, to expand the horizon of how we look at history.
The book shows how human societies have developed and collapsed in the context of continuous changes in climate (weather, temperature, precipitation), nature (volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, AND OTHER geological changes), and social characteristics (demography, resource use, city formation, specialization of social functions, and power struggles.
Societies collapsing as a consequence of climate changes, social conflicts, drought or extreme temperatures, impacted by years or decades of the aftermath of volcanic eruptions is of all times.
