This is the journal of Olaf Brugman's activity in the Federated Wiki.
December
31 December: How the World Really Works, published by Vaclav Smil in 2022, explains the key pillars their interdependent dynamics driving the development of our societies and economies: Energy, Food and Materials.
23 December: wrote about Polygon Maps as a baseline to bring together geolocation and area-based data.
10 December: I am exploring the application of graph technology for sustainability management. I call that Sustainability as a Graph.
1 December: We shared [[Ten Syntegrative Ideas for the VSM] with the Viable Systems Community at Metaphorum.
November
20 November: Systems Models such as the VSM should be developed to be applicable to ecosystems of organizations and/or in specific jurisdictions.
Oct 2022
21 October: I took up exploring how we can use natural language processing (NLP) to extract taxonomies and semantic networks from sustainability documents.
Sept 2022
20 September: we read La philosophie dans le boudoir by Marquis de Sade, first published in 1795. The book essentially is a catalog of the acts that people may seek to gain or experience pleasure in the absence of ethical considerations. Other people may be an object of pleasure or an instrument to experience pleasure without consideration of consequences to others. This is a catalog people without any interest in or values regarding Sustainability may want to borrow from across its full spectrum of options.
12 September: Journal of a Genius ("Journal d'un génie"), the French Original, by Salvador Dalí. Also The Secret Life of Salvador Dalí ("La vie secrète de Salvador Dalí", French original title).
11 September: Read Søren Kierkegaard's Either - Or, in which he studies - in my perception - the ideal types of the Esthetic Man, the Ethical Man and the Religious Man.
3-9 September: Read Kim Stanley Robinson's book The Ministery for the Future, a novel about how the global world order evolves as it seeks to further implement and achieve the Paris Accord on Climate Change. Fiction and Science Fiction help us to envisage possible futures.
9 September: research Ecosystem Accounting and definitions of Nature.
20 August: used Napkin to capture and link my stream of ideas quickly. The tool is fast and light. Export in JSON possible. See Napkin.
Aug 2022
10 August: heard David Bollier's podcast Frontiers of Commoning, interviewing Alanna Irving of Open Collective.
8 August: To meet information and data needs for sustainable development, we need to have models of Earth, Biosphere, Ecosystems, Economy, Society, Geolocation.
6 August: Green Software Development is a fascinating initiative. See the recommendations of the Green Software Foundation link .
2 August: Explored Human Wisdom and wrote a page on Graham Hanconck's ideas on ancient humanity's understanding of mind and consciousness.
July 2022
30 July: Published Language, Maxims and Symbols in Social Systems. It was inspired by thoughts from sociology, philosophy, knowledge management, natural language processing, AI, knowledge graph databases, sustainable development thought, systems science, art, education, and personal experiences in organizational practice.
27 July: I wrote a page on Ecosystem, inspired by various thoughts and ideas that came together. The page contains a novelty, an Ecological Lineage of Mind. I also learned that Salvatore Iaconesi, inspiring digital designer, hacker, robotic engineer and digital future of life innovator, passed away at the age of 49.
27 July: Thinking about Pattern Language, it crossed my mind that in order to get to a language expressing a pattern, there should be first Language Patterns that generate the language to generate the patterns.
25 July: Got to know Relocalize.Net through Marc Pierson. Local solutions for local problems.
He also pointed me again to FedWiki Training again.
March 2022
13 March: Salvatore Iaconesi and Oriana Persico provide their view on The Future of Living, from a Design, AI, and Art perspective. They provide 11 principles to characterize the future interaction of ecosystem design, humanity and Articifial Intelligence. View their presentation here .
12 March: The Russo-Ukraino war may set back the achievements of global sustainable development back for years. I wrote about it here .
6 March. Sustainable development in times of armed conflicts and humanitarian suffering need to be rethought. I wrote about it here .
4 March: The military invasion of Ukraine, a sovereign country, by the armed forces of the Russian Federation raises questions on the Values and Principles of sustainable development and sustainability of the Russian Federation.
Feb 2022
25 Feb: I received a petition at work, from Extinction Rebellion Agriculture in the Netherlands. "XR" as they call themselves consists of local and thematic activist groups raising climate awareness.
24 Feb: The army of the Russian Federation invaded Ukraine, a sovereign country.
I filled Story to Graph with content and added a story graph about business process modeling.
22 Feb: I forked Story to Graph and My Favorite ToolsPage by Marc Pierson, since they seem a good template for me to build on. They inspired to write the graph story below.
The story I graphed and the graph I storied is From Strategy to Business Performance.
Also, the story to graphy idea is inspiring. Come to think of it. Federated wiki pages are nodes in a knowledge graph themselves: it is basically a bunch of connected JSON maps, if you think of Federated wiki in terms of nodes and connections.
21 Feb: There are various ways to look at and evaluate Sustainability assessments methods. I brought some together here: link .
Feb 20: I have just published an article on using Knowledge Graphs to implement Business Rules prompting organizational action, stemming from regulations, organizational policies, or voluntary organizational commitments. link .
Sustainability assessments of organizations to qualify organizations eligible for doing business should address Awareness, Commitment, Management Control Systems, Track Record and Transparency to capture Sustainability Performance. I wrote a wider article on this here .
4 Feb: I have published some thoughts on Knowledge Graphs to integrate knowledge on the sustainability performance of companies and knowledge of aspects of our Earth System: link . The article was written from a Sustainable FInance perspective. It has graphs maded with Neo4j's Arrows App.
January 2022
Jan 21: from Marc Pierson , I learned about the Arrows app by Neo4j, which lets you draw logical diagrams, linkable with content (pages, data, graphs). Through Eric Dobbs' Enrich Arrows App tool, the Arrows APP SVG formate graph can be converted and published in FedWiki.
Jan 21: While Sustainable Finance is becoming defined and regulated, it is rather remarkable that Sustainable Business is not yet regulated. This is a disbalance. Finance is a company input. Companies have other inputs too. So what is the point of a company having acquired sustainable finance (a loan or bond linked with sustainable benefits of where the money goes to or is used for), while how it processes inputs and while its outputs are not subject to the same criteria and notions of sustainability?
Jan 20: Learned about Logical Levels of Learning, Communicating and Change. A higher level organizes de information at the level Mission, Identity, Values, Skills, Behavior, Environment.
Jan 19: Ideas enable Concepts; Mood influences (contaminates) Ideas; Body influences Mood and vice versa. These notions are part of the NLP communication model?
Jan 18: Could business and leadership be embedded in a computer program, based on NLP principles?
Jan 17: Everything needs to be clear. Especially in business. It is becoming the dominant virus of management and leadership, including in the field of sustainability management. By far the larger part of the day of many employees passes preoccupied with goals (these days they need to be science-based or they won't count), scrum boards, tasks, progress meetings, and almost militarily embedded in squads, tribes, groups, all reinforcing trivial conformity around the set goals and ambition, with short-term horizons. How does that leave room for Creativity, for Innovative Design, for Play to yield unexpected associations and ideas.
Everything needs to be clear. Ambiguity is rejected and discouraged. Open floor plan office spaces provide the maximum number of impulses to get you distracted, interrupting thinking, focus, creation, and productivity.
Jan 16: Vladimir Mokiy wrote a beautiful article in Informing Science on the influence of Earth factors (e.g. geophysical tectonic activity, earth rotation speed) on the origination of viruses and the activity of viruses through the piezoelectric effect. While the article looked at virus-driven pandemics, the implication is that Earth factors influence biological and non-biological system effects. Implications for: Climate Change, Public Health. Connections with Cycles.
Jan 15: Vilma Machado this morning launched and shared the new concept of a Quantum Notebook. This is understood as a notebook in which - as I understand and interpret Vilma, people bring together ideas, energy, inspiration, and spirit. To drive energy, thoughts, and matter together. What you are, think, wish, provokes effects at material and spiritual level.
Jan 9: Discussed with two Agroecology, Soil and Biodiversity experts on Biological Controls on the use of Agrochemicals for crop protection, Dr Arne Janssen of University of Amsterdam and the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) in Brazil, and retired professor dr Irene Maria Cardoso also of UFV. link . Their main stance is that if one stops using artificially made agrochemicals and make sure that natural predators are introduced, crops will not or much less suffer from biological plagues.
12 Jan: Went to look today for videos and presentation on Federated Wiki.
Agroecology knowledge is a Knowledge Commons. Knowledge capture and enhancement could be well-supported by federated wiki and wikidata.
Jan 8: I finally finished reading Systems Ecology. Systems Perspective. See book Systems Ecology .
Jan 4: I published two articles in my blog on Medium.com, on sustainability policies, from a systems sciences perspective. One was about understanding Sustainability Policy from a systems science perspective. See on medium.com understanding sustainability policy
The other was about the measurement and definition of sustainability performance. See on medium.com how to measure sustainability performance .

The Four Causes model by Aristotle and as incorporated in Relational Biology and its derived relational biology concept of Systems in Systems Science is a versatile tool to analyze systems and what becomes of them. See John Kineman and Pamela Buckle in Systems Research from Springer Verlag.
If the Four Causes describe functions and matter, being and becoming, systems and systems development, then the Four Causes describe, form, represent and serve Patterns.
